Unexpected Surprises

• June 21st, 2012 •

I spent some good old fashioned girlfriend time this weekend with one of my dearest and best friends. She doesn’t live too far away, but I don’t see her as often as I would like. We both just get busy and time passes us by. There is just nothing better than spending time with a great friend.  We decided to go to Oak Glen, which is a favorite spot of ours. It is up in the mountains, ( I use the term mountain lightly. They get snow, have bear and deer. So, I call them mountains.) The area is known for its raspberry picking in the summer, and apple picking in the fall. The small town is peppered with cute shops and restaurants. A couple of must sees are The Black Twig and Snow Line. The Black Twig is a great gift shop and restaurant. They opened recently and are a great addition to the area. Snow Line is an orchard where you can pick your own raspberries and apples. They have the best apple cider donuts too!

We turned down a windy side road that we hadn’t been on before. It seemed like it was going nowhere and then before us was a bed and breakfast called Serendipity Ranch. It was quite an unexpected surprise because we know the area pretty well and here was this hidden jewel.  When we pulled up we were greeted by the owners who gave us a tour of their beautiful bed and breakfast. It sits on 8 acres of natural woods and comes complete with a koi pond, butterfly garden, and a really good chance of seeing the natural wildlife of the area. They told us that they can see bears, deer, mountain lion, and coyotes on any given day. Another unexpected surprise, as I had no idea that there was this much wildlife so close to us. You see, Oak Glen is only about 30 minutes from my girlfriends in Riverside.

The grounds surrounding the B & B, were absolutely beautiful and peaceful. We could hear the wind rustling through the leaves and the birds chirping away as we discovered this bucolic setting.

Experiences like this unexpected surprise are exactly the reason why I always encourage you to take the road less traveled, literally. I am already planning on going back with my husband and family. Here are some photos I took. I hope you get an unexpected surprise soon too! (Yes, I know that a surprise is unexpected or it wouldn’t be a surprise. It just dawned on me that the title of Unexpected Surprise is a little redundant. Oh well…)
