Kiwi Berries

• March 7th, 2012 •

What are Kiwi Berries, you might be asking?  I wondered the same thing yesterday when I was wandering around Growers Direct, our local produce market, and ran across these little jewels.  Of course, I had to buy some and eat one immediately.  The great thing about Kiwi Berries is that you can just pop the whole thing in your mouth.  No fussing like a regular kiwi fruit, although I love eating them too.  Kiwi Berries are ripe when the outer skin becomes dull.  If you purchase them with a shiny exterior, leave them at room temperature to ripen.  You can always hasten the process by putting them into a paper bag.

Kiwi Berries are fabulous in smoothies as well.  Just replace whatever regular berries you use or add this in as an addition.  They are also great in a fruit salad and would definitely be a conversation starter on the buffet table.  I will definitely be experimenting with new recipes for these berries.  Look for them in the upcoming days.
